SA Games: Hosts Sri Lanka, despite some controversial decisions in boxing, increased their gold medal tally to eleven while India extended their massive lead with over 40 golds on day five of the 10th South Asian Games continued yesterday.

The latest discipline contributing towards Sri Lanka's gold medal tally was shooting (1) and wushu (4). Mayumi Raheem followed Andrew Abeysinghe to win her second gold medal of the eight-nation Games while Sri Lanka Nilmini Illangarathna won the gold medal in women's 50m air rifle prone event at the Welisara Navy Range.

Illangaratne, attached to Sri Lanka Navy, did well to aggregate 588 points to win the final in style. Competing under familiar conditions at her Welisara base range, Illangarathna was in goof form. The best of her six shots came in the fourth with a perfect 100 points. She had scores if 97, 97, 97, 100, 99, 98 to aggregate 588 points in her 50m air rifle prone event for women.

Finishing second behind the Sri Lanka Navy shooter for the silver and bronze medals were Indians K. Meena (584) and Raj Kumari (584).

The Lankan competitors bagged four gold medals, two silver and four bronze medals yesterday's wushu events worked off at St. Joseph's College Gymnasium at Darley Road. The four gold medals that were on offer were shared by Sri Lanka and Nepal with two each.

Asanka Sujeewan, H.M. Manuranga, Sujith Makavitage and Thilak Hettiarachchi were the Lankan golden boys at the Josephian gym. Sujeewan had a total of 26.86 to win men's Changquan event after a keen tussle with Indian Inungamba Singh (26.77) who won the silver.

The other gold medal for Sri Lanka came in Nanquan event at which Sri Lanka's Manuranga totalled 26.90 to finish on top. India's Somajit Sagolsem won the silver medal with 26.72. The other two gold medals for Sri Lanka in whushu came though Hettiaarachchi (56kg) and Makawitage (Taiji Quan - combined).

K.A. Damayanthi won a silver medal for silver in Nanquan combined event. The two Nepalese gold medallists in wushu were Bhuwan Shrestha (Changquan combined) and Bina Khadka Lama (Nanquan combined).

The mighty Indians continued their dominance at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Pool Complex. India won its 25th medal in swimming. The only bright spot for the hosts Sri Lanka here was that record breaking swim of young Mayumi Raheem.

Raheem, who gave Sri Lanka its first gold medal at the eight-nation Games on Saturday, accounted for her second gold and seventh medal of the Colombo Games when she came first in women's 200m breast stroke final.

She blossomed to be one of the most successful Sri Lankan swimmers in the South Asian Games history with yet another brilliant performance. Raheem returned a timing of two minutes and 45.24 seconds. Finishing behind Raheem for the silver medal was Indian Tejeswini Vardharaju (2:46.72). But Raheem's team mate Mineka Karunaratne finished a poor fifth with a timing of 3:02.52.

Then there were two more silver medals by the Lankan swimmers. Daniel Lee clocked 55.75 seconds to win the silver medal in men's 100m freestyle final. But he finished well behind the Indian gold medallist - Virdheval Khade, who had a new South Asian Games record timing of 52.71 seconds.

Sri Lanka's second swimming silver came in women's 800m freestyle relay event.

The Lankan team, comprising Devika Gunatillake, Hansani Weerathunga, Piyumi Ekanayake and that golden girl Raheem, clocked nine minutes and 38.41 seconds to finish second behind India (9:18.76).

Amidst highly biased and controversial decisions, Sri Lanka had to be satisfied with two silver medals at last night's boxing finals. Battling under unreasonable conditions, Sri Lanka's T.B. Harsha Kumara (51kg) and S.I. Kumara (69kg) won only the silver medals after losing their respective finals.

Making the latest contributions towards India's rich haul of 25 winning medals within four days were Mandar Divese (16:17.58 - NGR, in men's 1,500m freestyle), Rehan Poncha (2:11.22 - NGR, in women's 200m individual medley), Fariha Zaman (2:31.49 - NGR, in women's 200m back stroke) and Kishpipra Mahajan (4:40.72 i women's 400m freestyle).

It was a goal feast at the Nandimithra Ekanayake International Hockey Stadium in Matale as Pakistan had the better of Bangladesh by five goals to two. The winners, who led 1-0 at the breather, cut lose and scored four more goals in the second half.

At the NYSC in Maharagama, Sri Lanka's women's kabbadi team had a good 11-point victory over Bangladesh. But the Bengoli men took revenge by beating the home team by a convincing margin of 33 points.
